What to Do When It Rains So Much and Your Pool Is Overflowing

Here in Florida, we’re no strangers to sudden, heavy rainstorms—especially during the summer months. If you’ve noticed your pool water rising high after days of rain, you might be wondering what to do next.
A pool that’s too full can impact water quality and, in extreme cases, overflow into your yard.
Here’s what you need to know when heavy rain has your pool pushing its limits.
1. Don’t Panic — A Full Pool Isn’t Always a Problem
Most pools are designed with overflow drains that help regulate excess water. If the water is just a little above the tile line, it may not require any action. However, extended periods of heavy rain can lead to chemical imbalance or over-saturation of your pool deck and nearby landscaping.
2. Drain a Little Water (Safely)
If the water level gets too high:
- Use the “waste” setting on your pool filter’s multiport valve to lower the water level.
- You can also use a submersible pump or siphon to carefully remove water. Be sure to direct drainage away from your home, foundation, and neighboring properties.
Important: Only lower the water a few inches. Draining too much can unbalance your pool chemistry or, in rare cases, lead to structural issues.
3. Let Us Handle the Chemistry
After heavy rain, your pool’s chemical balance is likely off. That’s where we come in! On your scheduled service day, Flow Pool Services will:
- Test your water chemistry
- Rebalance pH, chlorine, stabilizer, and alkalinity
- Skim and brush your pool to clear out debris and contaminants
We’ll make sure your pool stays clean, clear, and safe—no stress on your end.
4. Monitor Pool Equipment and Surrounding Area
Heavy rain can flood areas around your pool equipment. If you notice standing water near your pump or electrical components, take steps to keep them dry and elevated. Prolonged water exposure can cause costly damage.
5. Plan Ahead for Future Storms
- Keep your pool clean and balanced before rain arrives. Flow Pool Services takes care of this!
- Make sure your yard drains well to prevent water pooling around your pool area.
